So... This is a weblog, eh? Cool.
Well, my intent here is to chronicle my experiences in relearning the art of blacksmithing, building myself back up into a more confident person, and possibly some other important lessons along the way. New York Times bestseller material here? I think not. But maybe, just maybe, you'll find some inspiration or usefulness from something posted herein.
I suppose a short introduction is in order. I will just keep things short so as not to lose anyone who honestly doesn't care about me or my story, but just wants to get into the hands-on stuff. I'm a 34-year old male resident of Canton, MI. I recently moved back home to live with my parents, and have really gotten myself into the sticky position of being a single man who has little self confidence and really doesn't know what he wants to do with his life... So... Blacksmithing. I had done it for several years when I was younger. As a hobby, and as a regular job, I found that it not only centered me, but gave me lots of opportunities to meet people and have something really interesting to talk about.
I have a small hoard of tools and equipment scattered about in several places, so I suppose the first thing I should do is get an idea of where I am going to set up, and what kind of projects I will be working on.
The first big question: Coal or gas?
Coal is great to work with, and my personal favorite, but solid fuels get some people and authorities a bit nervous, so there are limitations. Gas is okay, and some people much prefer it, but I'm looking for more than just a utilitarian perspective. I need to experience this for the whole feeling that I remember from my youth, so I'm going to have to find a way to make coal work.
Okay. That's enough for now. I'll get back with more as I come up with an idea of how I'll get this whole process started.
